Basic Engineering Mathematics
Unlike most engineering maths texts, this book does not assume a firm grasp of GCSE maths, and unlike low-level general maths texts, the content is tailored specifically to the needs of engineers. The result is a unique book written for engineering students that takes a starting point below GCSE level. Basic Engineering Mathematics is therefore ideal for students of a wide range of abilities, especially for those who find the theoretical side of mathematics difficult.

Now in its fifth edition, Basic Engineering Mathematics is an established textbook, with the previous edition selling nearly 7500 copies. All students that require a fundamental knowledge of mathematics for engineering will find this book essential reading. The content has been designed primarily to meet the needs of students studying Level 2 courses, including GCSE Engineering, the Diploma, and the BTEC First specifications. Level 3 students will also find this text to be a useful resource for getting to grips with essential mathematics concepts, because the compulsory topics in BTEC National and A Level Engineering courses are also addressed.
Numerous worked examples supported by 600 worked problems and 1050 further problems within exercises included throughout the text. Additionally, there are 15 assignments included at regular intervals.

Free instructor's manual available for download, which includes solutions to assignments.

Basic Engineering Mathematics is an excellent book for review or for those looking for a very well organized and step by step instruction in engineering math. The book is very easy to read through and can definitely be used as a supplement resource too. With that said, there is one flaw; The answer key possesses several incorrect answers here and there. I have broken down each problem as far as it could go to verify and I have had several engineers do the incorrect problems only to reach the same answer I reached. While unseemly, it does force you to look closely at every problem to make sure it is solved correctly.

When and how did the universe begin? Why are we here? What is the nature of reality? Is the apparent “grand design” of our universe evidence of a benevolent creator who set things in motion—or does science offer another explanation? In this startling and lavishly illustrated book, Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow present the most recent scientific thinking about these and other abiding mysteries of the universe, in nontechnical language marked by brilliance and simplicity.

According to quantum theory, the cosmos does not have just a single existence or history. The authors explain that we ourselves are the product of quantum fluctuations in the early universe, and show how quantum theory predicts the “multiverse”—the idea that ours is just one of many universes that appeared spontaneously out of nothing, each with different laws of nature.

They conclude with a riveting assessment of M-theory, an explanation of the laws governing our universe that is currently the only viable candidate for a “theory of everything”: the unified theory that Einstein was looking for, which, if confirmed, would represent the ultimate triumph of human reason.

Download : Mathematical Methods for Physicists

Written By share_e on Thursday, March 15, 2012 | Thursday, March 15, 2012

My instructor chose Arfken as the text for our Mathematical Physics class. He has a high opinion of the book, although he did not require it to be read and did not assign any of the exercises. Rather than using Arfken, most of the students in my class used various mathematics and physics books from the university library.

My opinion of Arfken is that it is so condensed that it is not understandable to undergraduates. You need to consult other texts extensively to fill in the gaps. For example, Arfken develops tensor analysis on pages 126 thru 130, 5 pages total. My copy of Applications of Tensor Analysis by McConnell does the same on it's first 171 pages. I hesitate to say that Arfken is useless, but you can draw your own conclusion from my last example.

Arfken is so abbreviated that it is not useful to the undergraduate as a reference either, in my opinion. Perhaps it is useful to persons who are familiar with the subject matter in advance, I am not sure. Were one or a group of people to flush this book out it might be more useful, but it would no doubt become many volumes.

Joseph W. Goodman held the William Ayer Chair in Electrical Engineering at Stanford, and also served in several administrative posts, including Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering, and Senior Associate Dean of Engineering for Faculty Affairs. He is now the William Ayer Professor Emeritus.

His work has been recognized by a variety of awards and honors, including the F.E. Terman Award of the American Society for Engineering Education, the Dennis Gabor Award of the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE), the Max Born Award, the Esther Beller Hoffman Award, the Ives Medal from the Optical Society of America, and the Education Medal of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and has served as president of the Optical Society of America and the International Commission for Optics.
Joe Goodman is rightly famous for his clear writing, teaching and thinking. I especially appreciate the clear boundaries that he draws around the segments of his subject: it is clear what is known & unknown, what is easy & what is hard. This book is worth having and studying as an example of how to write a textbook, not only for its subject matter.

Download : Optical System Design, Second Edition

Buy This Book

Honed for more than 20 years in an SPIE professional course taught by renowned optical systems designer Robert E. Fischer, Optical System Design, Second Edition brings you the latest cutting-edge design techniques and more than 400 detailed diagrams that clearly illustrate every major procedure in optical design.

This thoroughly updated resource helps you work better and faster with computer-aided optical design techniques, diffractive optics, and the latest applications, including digital imaging, telecommunications, and machine vision. No need for complex, unnecessary mathematical derivations-instead, you get hundreds of examples that break the techniques down into understandable steps.

In the acknowledgements the authors state they "wanted to create a book in the field of optical system design that was clear and easy to understand" - Mission accomplished!

This book is indeed easy to understand but nevertheless provides detailed explanations of how to design an optical system. While not deeply mathematical there are sufficent formulaes provided (with examples) so you can understand what to do and how to do it. If you were puzzled as to why achromatic lenses are used you won't be after you read this book. The book also explains how distortion occurs and how to get rid of it. Also there are sections on mechanical components such as lens mounting etc. The book also explains how to use typical optical design software.

My only (slight) dissapointment was the relatively few descriptions of typical systems - but using the book you could design these from first principles. Also to be fair there are so many designs out there that this is probabaly asking too much.

Rudolf Kingslake is regarded as the American father of lens design; his book, not revised since its publication in 1978, is viewed as a classic in the field. Naturally, the area has developed considerably since the book was published, the most obvious changes being the availability of powerful lens design software packages, theoretical advances, and new surface fabrication technologies.
This book provides the skills and knowledge to move into the exciting world of contemporary lens design and develop practical lenses needed for the great variety of 21st-century applications. Continuing to focus on fundamental methods and procedures of lens design, this revision by R. Barry Johnson of a classic modernizes symbology and nomenclature, improves conceptual clarity, broadens the study of aberrations, enhances discussion of multi-mirror systems, adds tilted and decentered systems with eccentric pupils, explores use of aberrations in the optimization process, enlarges field flattener concepts, expands discussion of image analysis, includes many new exemplary examples to illustrate concepts, and much more.
Optical engineers working in lens design will find this book an invaluable guide to lens design in traditional and emerging areas of application; it is also suited to advanced undergraduate or graduate course in lens design principles and as a self-learning tutorial and reference for the practitioner.

Matlab is the accepted standard for scientific computing, used globally in virtually all Neuroscience and Cognitive Psychology laboratories. For instance, SPM, the most used software for the analysis and manipulation of fMRI images in research and clinical practice is fully programmed in matlab, and its use of the possibility to allow for sophisticated software modules to be freely added to the software has established it as the by far dominant software in the field. Many universities now offer, or are beginning to offer matlab introductory courses in their neuroscience and psychology programs. Nevertheless, so far there hasn't been a textbook specific to this market, and the use of the plethora of existing engineering focused Matlab textbooks is notoriously difficult for teaching the package in those environments.

This is the first comprehensive teaching resource and textbook for the teaching of Matlab in the Neurosciences and in Psychology. Matlab is unique in that it can be used to learn the entire empirical and experimental process, including stimulus generation, experimental control, data collection, data analysis and modeling. Thus a wide variety of computational problems can be addressed in a single programming environment. The idea is to empower advanced undergraduates and beginning graduate students by allowing them to design and implement their own analytical tools. As students advance in their research careers, they will have achieved the fluency required to understand and adapt more specialized tools as opposed to treating them as "black boxes". Virtually all computational approaches in the book are covered by using genuine experimental data that are either collected as part of the lab project or were collected in the labs of the authors, providing the casual student with the look and feel of real data. In some rare cases, published data from classical papers are used to illustrate important concepts, giving students a computational understanding of critically important research.

The ability to effectively use computers in research is necessary in an academic environment that is increasingly focused on quantitative issues. Matlab represents an ideal language of scientific computing. It is based on powerful linear algebra structures which lend themselves to empirical problems on the one hand, while at the same time allowing the student to make rapid problem-oriented progress (particularly in terms of visualization of data points) without having to lose focus by worrying too much about memory allocation and other "plumbing" minutiae as would be required in other, more low-level programming languages such as C or C++. Currently, there are several books that provide introductions to Matlab that are either too generic and fundamental or too irrelevant for neuroscientists and cognitive psychologists who typically face a very circumscribed range of problems in data collection, data analysis and signal processing. Some non-book tutorials and primers that are in use in the community are typically out of date. Matlab versions are usually not backwards compatible. Many commands and functions used in older tutorials and primers, such as "flops" won't work in current versions of Matlab, necessitating a book that is timely and up-to-date. The complete lack of a relevant resource in this area, combined with a clearly felt need for such a text provided the primary and initial impetus for this project.

Download : The Elements of MATLAB Style

Buy This Book
The Elements of MATLAB Style is a guide for both new and experienced MATLAB programmers. It provides a comprehensive collection of standards and guidelines for creating solid MATLAB code that will be easy to understand, enhance, and maintain. It is written for both individuals and those working in teams in which consistency is critical. This is the only book devoted to MATLAB style and best programming practices, focusing on how MATLAB code can be written in order to maximize its effectiveness. Just as Strunk and White's The Elements of Style provides rules for writing in the English language, this book provides conventions for formatting, naming, documentation, programming and testing. It includes many concise examples of correct and incorrect usage, as well as coverage of the latest language features.

The author also provides recommendations on use of the integrated development environment features that help produce better, more consistent software. This is a very clearly organized and written book. Serious Matlab users will have already formed opinions and developed 'styles' on many of the topics covered, but the author's suggestions and the underlying reasoning are worth considering nevertheless. I found myself agreeing with about 80% of his material and at least half of the remainder was at least worth considering.

An example: the author recommends arranging code flow (including 'continues', 'breaks', and 'returns' in functions so that there is only a single exit point for the entire function. While I partially disagree (if the input is bad, I see no reason not to incorporate an immediate 'return'; the alternative is bound to involve setting and checking an otherwise unneeded flag), at least considering this principle has made for - I think - better flow in the functions I've written subsequently. And the discussion of Matlab's 'publish' feature, and coding for it, has opened my eyes and those of a co-worker to a whole new way of producing report-quality output automatically. As I write this, I actually make my living writing Matlab code, but I think even for beginners in the language the sample code snippets will make worthwhile parsing.

Get the essential tools for your courses in engineering, math, and science. MATLAB(r) is a high-level language and interactive environment that lets you focus on your course work and applications, rather than on programming details. It enables you to solve many numerical problems in a fraction of the time it takes to write a program in a lower-level language such as Java(t), C, C++, or Fortran. You can also use MATLAB to analyze and visualize data using automation capabilities, thereby avoiding the manual repetition common with other products.

The MATLAB in Student Version provides all the features and capabilities of the professional version of MATLAB software, with no limitations. Download : Engineers Guide to MATLAB, An (3rd Edition)

Buy This Book
Many 'engineering' matlab books don't live up their titles. They are simply written as general introductions to matlab with a few useless thoughts about engineering thrown in. In my opinion, a good matlab engineering book focuses less on general tips that you could get anywhere, and more on practical problem solving techniques and methodologies that provide insight into a paticular engineering problem and its solution. This books succeeds in that respect.

Though it gives space to the more general issues of using matlab, it gives ample room to specific engineering problems. I found its information and examples very useful. The topics are focused on mechanical engineering fields, such as vibration and control; however, the math used for such topics are used across engineering and science disciplines. Thus, any scientist or engineer will find this book useful. The book is written so that engineers at many levels can benefit from it. For example, as a former graduate student, I found the treatments of vibration response analysis insightful.

However, an undergraduate or otherwise inexperienced user would benefit from this book as well, because there is alot of general discussion of how to effectively and efficiently use matlab and write m-files. All in all, I found this book excellent for both its treatment of high level engineering analysis issues and its more general matlab tips and discussion.

Buy This Book
Highlighting the new aspects of MATLAB® 7.10 and expanding on many existing features, MATLAB® Primer, Eighth Edition shows you how to solve problems in science, engineering, and mathematics. Now in its eighth edition, this popular primer continues to offer a hands-on, step-by-step introduction to using the powerful tools of MATLAB.

This primer is a useful little booklet. It presents language features in a progressive manner, with the easy things first and more sophisticated features built onto these. … it also serves as a reference work and is a useful supplement to the online help that comes with MATLAB itself. The presentation throughout is clear and concise, with the text enlivened by illustrative examples where appropriate. Altogether, the book is a complete course in MATLAB, including a careful introduction to object-oriented programming and other advanced and powerful features.

I highly recommend this book to MATLAB users at all levels of expertise. After many years away from MATLAB, I am now picking it up again to do some research in signal processing strategies for cochlear implants. As I got into it, I realized that I had forgotten enough of the details as to be pretty useless so I got this book and started from scratch. I love this book! Extremely well written. I especially like the examples that the author intentionally ‘botched’ in order to make teaching points.

Download : MATLAB Demystified

Buy This Book
Get started using MATLAB right away with help from this hands-on guide. MATLAB Demystified offers an effective and enlightening method for learning how to get the most out this powerful computational mathematics tool. Using an easy-to-follow format, this book explains the basics of MATLAB up front. You'll find out how to plot functions, solve algebraic equations, and compute integrals. You'll also learn how to solve differential equations, generate numerical solutions of ODEs, and work with special functions. Packed with hundreds of sample equations and explained solutions, and featuring end-of-chapter quizzes and a final exam, this book will teach you MATLAB essentials in no time at all.

Overall this book is a reasonable introduction to Matlab 7.x but it tends to drag in places and seem rushed in others. Also, there are enough typographical errors in the examples to make it difficult to arrive at the expected results especially if one is a beginner. For example, the solution to one of the quiz questions in chapter 5 requires the use of the "eval" function which was never introduced in the book. Oddly one of the most powerful features of Matlab, programming, is pasted onto the end of the statistics chapter as a brief introduction whereas it should have it's own chapter and covered in a lot more detail.

Also, there are chapters on transforms and curve fitting but strangely no mention of time series. Lastly, quizzes at the end of each chapter often leave out key material introduced in that chapter. Also, the final exam at the end of the book leaves out half of the later chapters.

Buy This Software
I am not currently a student so I was not able to purchase Matlab from Mathworks. I ordered a used copy of the student version of Matlab 2007 from Amazon. I put the cd into my computer. The disc loaded onto my hard drive in about 35 minutes. After the installation was complete, the program prompted me to register with Mathworks. When I tried to activate the software I got a message from Mathworks that the serial number of my disc (the serial number appears on the cd case) is registered with another e-mail address (probably the previous user of the disc).

I sent an e-mail to Mathworks asking them for assistance. This reply came back from Mathworks: "Unfortunately I will not be able to assist you with your request [regarding activation]. The Student Version of our software is non-transferable, so you will not be able to access this copy as it has already been associated to another user. If you would like to use our Student Version software you will need to purchase a copy for your own use. I have included information about our latest release, as well as how to purchase it below.

Please let me know if you need anything else." If you are currently a student with proof of enrollment that's great because you can purchase a new copy of the student version of Matlab from Mathworks. If you aren't a student then you are out of luck--I tried a used copy and I couldn't get it to work because apparently the Matlab cd can only be activated to work on your computer by Mathworks.

Computer screens, tutorials, samples, and homework questions in math, science, and engineering, provide the student with the practical hands-on experience needed for total proficiency.

I am a robotics engineering masters student who is REALLY behind on his Matlab knowledge based on the fact that i have a background in biology. (Long story). I just completed my first semester and bought this book in May to learn matlab more thoroughly over the summer. This book is just FANTASTIC. I couldn't ask for more. It is structured logically, the examples are CLEAR and it just makes total sense. I never realized that it would be this readable and excellent. If you are a beginner it can truly be read cover to cover.

The problems are interesting and the step by step guides are just what i needed. I initially thought twice about spending the $80 when there were cheaper texts available, but let me tell you from experience, don't bother. I have read some other Matlab texts and they pale in comparison to this one. It is worth every penny. If you have a limited knowledge or are without any knowledge of Matlab GET THIS BOOK. It is great and worth the extra money.

Assuming no knowledge of programming, this book presents both programming concepts and MATLAB's built-in functions, providing a perfect platform for exploiting MATLAB's extensive capabilities for tackling engineering problems. It starts with programming concepts such as variables, assignments, input/output, and selection statements, moves onto loops and then solves problems using both the 'programming concept' and the 'power of MATLAB' side-by-side. In-depth coverage is given to input/output, a topic that is fundamental to many engineering applications.

I have used and looked at over a dozen MATLAB textbooks throughout my undergrad study, and I can confidently say this is by far the best one for anyone to pick up MATLAB from scratch. More importantly, this is the only MATLAB textbook that I have come across that teaches the concept of programming so readers can pick up the basics and start writing their own scripts. Many MATLAB textbooks only teach how to use certain functions/features but fail terribly to impart the fundamentals of MATLAB - something that students really need to know so they can use MATLAB efficiently for their homework/projects/etc. I was a tutor/teaching assistant for some engineering courses and headed a few MATLAB workshops for BU Students while in college. I wish this book were published earlier - it would have made many students' lives a lot easier.
