Basic Engineering Mathematics is an excellent book for review or for those looking for a very well organized and step by step instruction in engineering math. The book is very easy to read through and can definitely be used as a supplement resource too. With that said, there is one flaw; The answer key possesses several incorrect answers here and there. I have broken down each problem as far as it could go to verify and I have had several engineers do the incorrect problems only to reach the same answer I reached. While unseemly, it does force you to look closely at every problem to make sure it is solved correctly.

My instructor chose Arfken as the text for our Mathematical Physics class. He has a high opinion of the book, although he did not require it to be read and did not assign any of the exercises. Rather than using Arfken, most of the students in my class used various mathematics and physics books from the university library.

My opinion of Arfken is that it is so condensed that it is not understandable to undergraduates. You need to consult other texts extensively to fill in the gaps. For example, Arfken develops tensor analysis on pages 126 thru 130, 5 pages total. My copy of Applications of Tensor Analysis by McConnell does the same on it's first 171 pages. I hesitate to say that Arfken is useless, but you can draw your own conclusion from my last example.

Arfken is so abbreviated that it is not useful to the undergraduate as a reference either, in my opinion. Perhaps it is useful to persons who are familiar with the subject matter in advance, I am not sure. Were one or a group of people to flush this book out it might be more useful, but it would no doubt become many volumes.

He is now the William Ayer Professor Emeritus.

His work has been recognized by a variety of awards and honors, including the F.E. Terman Award of the American Society for Engineering Education, the Dennis Gabor Award of the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE), the Max Born Award, the Esther Beller Hoffman Award, the Ives Medal from the Optical Society of America, and the Education Medal of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and has served as president of the Optical Society of America and the International Commission for Optics.
Joe Goodman is rightly famous for his clear writing, teaching and thinking. I especially appreciate the clear boundaries that he draws around the segments of his subject: it is clear what is known & unknown, what is easy & what is hard. This book is worth having and studying as an example of how to write a textbook, not only for its subject matter.

One of the great accomplishments of geometric analysis in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries was the development of the theory of Laplacians on smooth manifolds. But what happens when the underlying space is rough? Fractals provide models of rough spaces that nevertheless have a strong structure, specifically self-similarity. Exploiting this structure, researchers in probability theory in the 1980s were able to prove the existence of Brownian motion, and therefore of a Laplacian, on certain fractals. An explicit analytic construction was provided in 1989 by Jun Kigami. Differential Equations on Fractals explains Kigami's construction, shows why it is natural and important, and unfolds many of the interesting consequences that have recently been discovered.

This introduction to ordinary differential and difference equations is suited not only for mathematicians but for scientists and engineers as well. Exact solutions methods and qualitative approaches are covered, and many illustrative examples are included. Matlab is used to generate graphical representations of solutions. Numerous exercises are featured and proved solutions are available for teachers. 

My complaints are:
1.) Robinson skimps a lot on theory, this would be fine for an applications book, but he tends to go light on the applictations too...

2.) The excercises are simple, unchallenging, sometimes tedious, and often extremely repetitious. Also, there are only about 5 problems per section.

3.) The book does not use enough concepts from analysis, complex analysis, or linear algebra. There's a section devoted to matrix methods of solving linear ODE's, but if you've already had some analysis/lin alg. this book will probably be unsatisfying.

Conclusions: If your a applied math/math/physics major, this book's probably a little short on rigor. If your an engineering major and/or are not very interested in a rigorous development of the subject, this book's probably not too bad (but there's definitely better out there).
