Free Download | Magnetic Bearings: Theory, Design, and Application to Rotating Machinery

Written By share_e on Wednesday, June 22, 2011 | Wednesday, June 22, 2011

Compiling the expertise of nine pioneers of the field, Magnetic Bearings - Theory, Design, and Application to Rotating Machinery offers an encyclopedic study of this rapidly emerging field with a balanced blend of commercial and academic perspectives. Every element of the technology is examined in detail, beginning at the component level and proceeding through a thorough exposition of the design and performance of these systems.

The book is organized in a logical fashion, starting with an overview of the technology and a survey of the range of applications. A background chapter then explains the central concepts of active magnetic bearings while avoiding a morass of technical details. From here, the reader continues to a meticulous, state-of-the-art exposition of the component technologies and the manner in which they are assembled to form the AMB/rotor system. These system models and performance objectives are then tied together through extensive discussions of control methods for both rigid and flexible rotors, including consideration of the problem of system dynamics identification. Supporting this, the issues of system reliability and fault management are discussed from several useful and complementary perspectives. At the end of the book, numerous special concepts and systems, including micro-scale bearings, self-bearing motors, and self-sensing bearings, are put forth as promising directions for new research and development.

Newcomers to the field will find the material highly accessible while veteran practitioners will be impressed by the level of technical detail that emerges from a combination of sophisticated analysis and insights gleaned from many collective years of practical experience. An exhaustive, self-contained text on active magnetic bearing technology, this book should be a core reference for anyone seeking to understand or develop systems using magnetic bearings.

Free Download | Basic Machines and How They Work by Naval Education And Training Program

Written By share_e on Monday, June 13, 2011 | Monday, June 13, 2011

Only elementary math skills are needed to follow this manual, which covers many machines and their components, including hydrostatics and hydraulics, internal combustion engines, trains, and more. 204 black-and-white illustrations. As a Mechanical Engineering student I found the book to be extremely useful. I was already familiar with most of the theories from Dynamics and Statics, but it was cool to see how non textbooks refer to certain things (IE rather than saying the pivot point they call it the fulcrum). While we generally go over gear theories and calculations in Dynamics, we certainly don't get into their classifications so that was another useful piece of knowledge that I picked up. The last two chapters were extremely knowledgeable, since neither was in any of my textbooks. The last two chapters covered power trains and the internal combustion engine and were surprisingly in depth. I would highly recommend this book for any Engineering student seeking to get an out of the textbook perspective on your Mechanics classes, or to pick up some information on the inner workings of the engine.

Free Download | Practical Electric Motor Handbook

Written By share_e on Saturday, April 9, 2011 | Saturday, April 09, 2011

Experienced product designers are increasingly expected to be adept at incorporating a range of components into their designs. Students and experimenters too need to look beyond basic circuits and devices to achieve adequate design solutions. For those experienced in engineering design, this is the guide to electric motors.  This book will allow engineers and designers to marry the technologies they know about with motor technology, and hence to incorporate motors into their products. Of the many good books on motors, such as Electric Motors and Drives by Hughes, none offer the engineering professional a tailored guide to motors taking into account their expertise. This book fills that gap.  Irving Gottlieb is a leading author of many books for practising engineers, technicians and students of electronic and electrical engineering.  Practical approach with minimum theory Covers a core area ignored by many electronics texts Shows how to incorporate motors into electronic products

Spectral Finite Element Method: Wave Propagation, Diagnostics and Control in Anisotropic and Inhomogeneous Structures (Computational Fluid and Solid Mechanics) - In recent times, the use of composites and functionally graded materials (FGMs) in structural applications has increased. FGMs allow the user to design materials for a specified functionality and therefore have numerous uses in structural engineering. However, the behaviour of these structures under high-impact loading is not well understood. Spectral Finite Element Method: Wave Propagation, Health Monitoring and Control in Composite and Functionally Graded Structures focuses on some of the wave propagation and transient dynamics problems with this complex media which had previously been thought unmanageable.

Free Download | Numerical Simulation in Fluid Dynamics: A Practical Introduction

In this translation of the German edition, the authors provide insight into the numerical simulation of fluid flow. Using a simple numerical method as an expository example, the individual steps of scientific computing are presented: the derivation of the mathematical model; the discretization of the model equations; the development of algorithms; parallelization; and visualization of the computed data. In addition to the treatment of the basic equations for modeling laminar, transient flow of viscous, incompressible fluids - the Navier-Stokes equations - the authors look at the simulation of free surface flows; energy and chemical transport; and turbulence. Readers are enabled to write their own flow simulation program from scratch. The variety of applications is shown in several simulation results, including 92 black-and-white and 18 color illustrations. After reading this book, readers should be able to understand more enhanced algorithms of computational fluid dynamics and apply their new knowledge to other scientific fields.

Free Download | Practical Balancing of Rotating Machinery

Description Rotating machinery (eg pumps, motors, compressors) is normally manufactured to precise measurements but there comes a point when the costs of manufacture mean that further precision is not cost-effective and thus any slight imbalance inherent in the machine will need to be attended to after manufacture. When such machinery is in operation, often at very high speeds of thousands of revs per minute, any imbalance will set up vibration and often noise. In addition, such imbalance will cause extra wear and loss of efficiency in the machine. The answer is to balance the affected parts of the machine so that it operates smoothly and efficiently.
